Skin Care: The Dynamic Trio!

Based on the beauty bloggers I follow, I feel as if these brands are super underrated, which is super disappointing because they are such amazing products! I use these three products day and night and they all keep my skin looking fresh, bright, and happy. Every morning I start with the Fabulous Foaming Face Wash, which exfoliates and cleanses my skin. Then I use the Aveeno Positively Radiant Brightening Cleanser, which not only cleanses my skin, but also evens out my skintone and the texture of my skin, and also brightens it! After washing, I use the Aveeno Clear Complexion Moisturizer and tah dah I'm done!

Day 3: DIY's

So girls, guys, whoever is reading I know I didn't post the rest of my skin care posts so I'm just going to start back from here. So I was looking up really cool DIY's to show you and I saw some that had to do with ice and milk and salt...interesting stuff like that. So I decided that I'll write about two that I thought were the most interesting.

Ice

Yeah, I know its winter you skin is already freezing cold, but did you know that icing your skin helps circulation as well as ward off wrinkles? Here are a few tricks on the wonders ice can do for your skin.

Shrink A Zit
Holding ice on a pesky pimple is a no-fuss way to get the red out. Ice decreases inflammation, and can even relieve the pain associated with acne. Wrap a cube in a ziplock baggie (a rough towel can break tender skin), hold against the affected area for five to ten minutes, and tell that zit to chill!

De-Puff Eyes
Rough night? Reach for an ice cube while you wait for your morning coffee to brew. Wrapping a cube in a washcloth and holding over the eyes can reduce early morning puffiness, and make you look and feel more alert. For a stronger effect, freeze cubes of caffeinated black tea, or store sliced cucumbers on ice to keep you feeling fresh.

Prime Skin
Before patting on foundation, run an ice cube over your face, focusing on areas with enlarged pores. The cold water will cause pores to reduce in size and minimize their appearance under makeup. Icing these areas before your application of a primer can yield extra-smooth results fit for an ice queen.

Scrub Away
For a skin-brightening pick-me-up, make a DIY icy scrub by blending fruits or veggies (like cucumber, strawberries or mango) with water and freezing in ice cube trays. Once frozen, gently rub a fruity cube over your face as part of your weekly facial. The chunky texture will exfoliate as the ice melts into a juicy slush.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt's beneficial properties have to do with its naturally occurring mineral compound of sulphate and magnesium. The former helps flush toxins, and the latter calms inflammation. Here are three DIY beauty treatments with Epsom (which you can buy pretty much anywhere) to get your whole body smooth and summer-ready.

Face
There’s not a more inexpensive or easy addition to your exfoliating routine than this. Epsom crystals are smooth and gently abrasive, so they work on delicate facial skin. Simply add a 1/2 teaspoon to your favorite cleansing cream or lotion and gently massage all over your face in small circles. Use twice once or twice a week. That’s it!

Body
In this recipe, the caffeine from the coffee in this scrub with help stimulate and constrict blood vessels for a tighter appearance. Tip: Use it before you crack open the self-tanning bottle for a more even application.
You need:
4 oz. Epsom salt
4 oz. coffee grounds
1 tsp. eucalyptus oil
Sesame oil to form a smooth paste (amount will vary; we used about 3 oz.)

Mix the Epsom salt with the coffee grounds in a bowl, then add both oils and stir well until the mixture is paste-like. In the shower, wet your body and use a palmful to scrub your entire body. This works best if you scrub for a few minutes, standing away from the water. Rinse well. Instant glow!

Day 2: Why Am I Getting Acne on My Body...? What Does It Mean?

So know that I've given you the everything you need to know about what your face acne is telling you, I'm going to tell you all about what acne on your body actually means!

Zone 1: Hormones

Like the jaw, when you get acne on your neck, it might indicate that your adrenal glands (hormones) are in overdrive. Other options: stress or excessive sugar intake. That’s if you are not wearing shirts with tight collars or have greasy hair that constantly touches the skin in this area. So wash your hair if its greasy, maintain a healthy diet, and keep calm and carry on.

Zone 2 & 3: Stress

Shoulder acne could mean that you are overstressed, sensitive and vulnerable. If you aren't stressed, check whether your handbag strap is causing friction against the skin.

Zone 4: Digestive System

Are you wearing clothes that aren't breathable like polyester or nylon? Acne on the chest can point towards digestive troubles, like a poor diet, bad eating habits, having excessively spicy food or drinking too many cold beverages on a regular basis.

Zone 5 & 6: Vitamin Levels

Skin is coarser on the arms so you can get small bumps called Keratosis pilaris in this area. This appears as small spots that give skin a rough, goose-bumpy appearance. Keratosis pilaris is usually caused by poor circulation and overproduction of dead cells at the hair follicle. Treat it with regular exfoliation and moisturizers that contain salicylic acid.

Zone 7: Blood Sugar Levels

There are very few oil glands in this area, making stomach acne a rarer complaint. When zits do crop up here, it’s usually because of one of these reasons: tight fitting clothes or high blood sugar.

Zone 8: Hygiene or STDs

Acne in this area is painful and very difficult to clear up. Most acne in this area come up because of ingrown hair from shaving or waxing. Then again, poor personal hygiene might also play a role. More worryingly though, it could be warts or the symptom of an STD (especially if the spots itch, ooze or don’t show any signs of improvement after 3-4 days).

Zone 9 & 10: Skin Sensitivities or Allergies

Acne on the thighs and upper legs often come up as a reaction to body lotions, shower gels, laundry detergent, fabric softener or dryer sheets. On the lower legs, there is the added factor of ingrown hair post-shaving or waxing. It’s best treated with a body wash that has salicylic acid or glycolic acid and a light moisturizer.

Zone 11 & 12: Nervous and Digestive Systems

This is the most common body area for acne and frequent reasons include allergies, excessive sweating, lack of hygiene, friction from athletic gear, clothes that are too tight and not breathable, backpack straps, irritation because of hair or body care products, reaction to laundry detergent, fabric softener or dryer sheets. If you have ruled out all these, evaluate whether your diet is loaded with fried and high calorie foods or you aren’t getting enough sleep… both could be contributing elements.

Zone 13 & 14: Digestive System

There are usually three reasons for acne to show up on the buttocks: underwear that’s dirty, not breathable or too tight; excessively dry skin; and poor diet or digestion, with too many cold drinks and too much spicy food. So if the zits don’t subside despite moisturizing your skin, wearing loose cotton clothes and keeping everything clean, start evaluating your dietary habits.

Next time your see that your breaking out on your back, chest, or anywhere on your body, your skin is probably trying to communicate on behalf of your internal organs. However, if you have medical issues, its always best to contact your doctor or dermatologist for a real prognosis.

Day 1: What is your acne telling you?

acne What is your acne telling you?

Ever wonder why there are patches of acne on your face or on your body that never go away or why you get acne on certain areas of your face? Well I have all the information for you right here, right now.

1 & 2: Digestive System — Your probably eating a lot of processed or junk food. You need to reduce the amount of fat in your diet, step up water intake and opt for cooling things like cucumbers.

3: Liver — Cut out the alcohol, greasy food and dairy. This is the zone where food allergies also show up first, so take a look at your ingredients. Besides all this, do 30 minutes of light exercise every day and get adequate sleep so your liver can rest.

4 & 5: Kidneys — Anything around the eyes (including dark circles) point to dehydration. Drink up!

6: Heart — Check your blood pressure and Vitamin B levels. Decrease the intake of spicy or pungent food, cut down on meat and get more fresh air. Besides this, look into ways to lower cholesterol, like replacing “bad fats” with “good fats” such as Omegas 3 found in nuts, avocados, fish and so on. Also, since this area is full of dilated pores, check that your makeup is not past its expiration date or is skin-clogging.

7 & 8: Kidneys — Again, drink up! And cut down on drinks like coffee and alcohol that cause further dehydration.

Zone 9 & 10: Respiratory system —  Do you have any allergies or breathing in bad air? This is your problem area for both. If neither of these is the issue, don’t let your body overheat, eat more cooling foods, cut down on sugar and get more fresh air. Also keep the body more cool by avoiding foods that make the body acidic (meat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, sugar). Another thing that most of us forget to do is clean our cell phones and pillow cases. These are the top two places that build up dirt and create acne!

Zone 11 & 12: Hormones — This is the main zone for stress and hormonal changes. And while both are sometimes unavoidable, you can decrease their effect by getting a good amount of sleep, drinking enough water, eating more greens and keeping skin very clean. Another interesting point: breakouts in this area indicate when you are ovulating (and on which side).

Zone 13: Stomach — Step up the fiber intake, reduce the toxin overload and drink herbal teas to help with digestion.

14: Illness — Zits here can be a sign that your body is fighting bacteria to avoid illness. Give it a break, take a yoga class, take a nap, take time to breathe deeply, drink plenty of water and know that everything always works out!

So the next time you break out or notice dark under-eye circles, look to your face map: your skin is probably trying to tell you something on behalf of the internal organs. This is just a general guide to head you off in the right investigative direction – just because you break out between the brows doesn’t always mean you have a bad liver!

2013 Favorites: Cheeks

Cheeks

NARS Laguna Bronzer
Everyone I talk to about this product loves it. Whats not to love anyway? Its a beautiful bronzer that when you apply it, theres not to much and theres not to little. Its a matte texture, but theres also a bit of sparkle.

MAC Mineralize Skin Finish
I kinda used this as a bronzer for a while... which made me look like a fairy, but I didn't really care. I loved the color on my cheeks and the tons of sparkle. I don't use it as much now, but when I want a bit of sparkle I apple a generous amount on my cheeks.

My Beauty Empties

Don't you just hate it when you finish up your products?! I know I do. One thing about finishing up a product that you really liked is that you can back and buy more!

Clinique Moisture Surge Intense- It was an amazing buy. Literally lasted 3 months because a little goes a long long way. Of course this product is for super dry skin, but Clinique has many other moisturizers for any skin type. I used this moisturizer particularly in the summer because the weather is dryer here in Cali.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel- I've had this moisturizer for about a year or so and I finally run out. Like the Moisture Surge, it is for more dry skin, but there is a lotion based moisturizer as well. I use 2 small pumps of this every morning and every night. It keeps my skin moisturized and happy!

Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara- Yes, this is a drug store mascara, but it's one of the best. The brush lengthened each of my eyelashes individually, which of course is what you want your mascara to do! I'm so sad that I finished this product, but I'm definitely buying this again.

Tresesme Curl Care- On the days that I want to wear my curly, I always use this product. It tightens my curls without making my hair feel hard and gross. Another plus is that it smells amazing.

MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation- Now that I know I have dry skin, I stopped using my powder foundation from MAC. From the start, the foundation would wear off throughout the day, which was definitely a turn off. It would also make my skin look very cakey and gross which was another turn off. I'm not buying that again!

The Beautiful Abyss

Beauty is only skin deep, beauty comes from within. From actually taking care of your skin to being comfortable in your own skin, this is where style starts. We've had a lot of thoughtful entries this week, and I loved reading the posts. Breaking style rules, mixing punk and modesty, and a full on deconstruction of cats on the internet and fashion (my two favorite things). Anyway, before I digress, you'll get lost in a world commentary so perhaps you'll digress into the abyss as well.
